Our last conference took place on Friday 16 September 2011.

Conference commenced at 9.00am and concluded at 5.00pm

Purpose

The purpose of this workshop was two-fold.  The first major focus was to look at current and emerging approaches to mine rehabilitation activities via case studies along with their achievements and lessons.

The second major focus was discussing and identifying measures for assessing post mining rehabilitation activity outcomes and their contribution towards biodiversity offset schemes.

In particular the workshop aims were:

  • To provide an overview of what rehabilitation/restoration strategies and techniques are currently is being practised in the Hunter Valley 
  • To present accounts of current on-ground rehabilitation efforts 
  • To provide an overview of what ecological outcomes are being achieved 
  • To understand what constitutes completion criteria 
  • To understand how outcomes are monitored and evaluated 
  • To understand what constitutes best practice rehabilitation and restoration activities on mine sites
  • To develop, where necessary, recommendations on best practice. 
  • To discuss approaches and techniques that will allow for post mining rehabilitation outcomes to be evaluated in biodiversity offset schemes 
  • To provide conceptualisations on what the valley floor landscape may look like in 50 years time.
