Facilities
The Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) is located at the former BHP-Billiton Newcastle Technology Centre adjacent to the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus. NIER is housed in a world-class research facility with extensive mineral, chemical and related technical laboratories, workshops, offices and five industrial-scale pilot plant workshops.
Funded through a $30 million Australian Government grant through the Education Investment Fund, NIER will include specialist laboratory space for test-bed and large-scale pilot plant facilities.
Building capacity will provide for a significant increase in research training activities, and access to industrial scale facilities will ensure students graduate with industry-relevant experience. When fully operational, the research precinct will support some 300 researchers in purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities unrivalled in Australia.
