The Project Grants Scheme is the NHMRC’s main avenue of support for individuals and small teams of researchers undertaking biomedical, public health and health services research in Australian universities, medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions.

Applications are to be drafted and submitted in RGMS.

A complete Project Grant Application must consist of the following:

  1. Completion of Parts A and B of the application form.
  2. The relevant information in your RGMS Profile and CV.
  3. The uploaded PDF document containing your Detailed Background and Research Plan including Track Records for each Chief Investigator.

Prior to submission of an application, applicants are to ensure they have read all relevant reference material.

Please refer to the NHMRC webpage for further information.

Research Office Deadlines:

Draft applications due to the Research Office - 12 February 2013

Final applications due to the Research Office -  4 March 2013*

NHMRC closes - 19 March 2013

*Please note: Applications received after the Research Office final application due date will not be eligible for a University of Newcastle Near Miss Grant.

Submission Process

In order for the Research Office to review your application (draft or final), the CIA must certify the application in RGMS under the Certification tab. This will result in the status changing to 'Submitted to RAO' (being the Research Office NOT the NHMRC). This process locks the application to allow static review; no editing is possible by either the CIA or the Research Office when the application is certified. Draft applications will be decertified after the draft review and this will allow you to complete the final version.

The Final application is due on 4 March 2013. This version should be ready for NHMRC submission. The Research Office will review this application and confirm if it is ready for NHMRC submission or if eligibility edits are necessary. In this instance, the application will be decertified to allow the CIA to make these critical edits. The CIA then recertifies the application and the Research Office submits the application to the NHMRC.

CI and AI certifications are due 4 March 2013. The application will not be submitted to the NHMRC until the Research Office has received email certifications from all CI and AIs.

NHMRC Reporting - If you have any outstanding NHMRC Progress or Final Reports, please complete these and forward to Rebecca.ford@newcastle.edu.au as soon as possible. Your application may be ruled ineligible if you have any outstanding obligations.
