Flechtheim Scholarship
Donor: Father Stephen Moore
Benefit: A scholarship will be offered annually (where possible). The scholarship provides an amount of $3,000 to be paid as a lump sum upon receipt of a research paper deemed by the Chair of the selection committee to be of suitable standard.
Closing Date: Saturday, 31 March 2012

This scholarship was established in 2006 by a legacy from the donor's maternal grandfather, Julius Flechtheim, a former professor of jurisprudence at Berlin University who died as a victim of the Holocaust in 1940. The legacy funding the scholarship was made available to Julius's grandson after the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims in 2005 recognised the legitimacy of a life insurance policy taken out by Professor Flechtheim 70 years earlier. He was a contemporary of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who lectured on systematic theology at the same time and who was killed by the Nazis in 1945.

In their respective fields both men recognised in the upheaval of their country that true responsibility (both secular and temporal) means freedom and true freedom means responsibility.

The scholarship is offered in the hope that it will give fresh inspiration to all who are called to ask the awkward moral and ethical questions by encouraging study into the ethics of responsible action with particular reference to Bonhoeffer's theology.

Further information to assist students interested in applying for the prestigious Flechtheim Scholarship can be found here

This fellowship was established in memory of Eric Clarence Parker, who, in 1957 became the first permanent teacher of Architecture to be appointed to the fledgling School of Architecture at the Newcastle University College. The school, formed in 1925, grew out of a call by the regional architectural profession for a professional architecture program to be offered in Newcastle to service the needs of local and regional practices. Eric Parker was head of the school from 1957 to 1965 and later, in 1974, was Professor of Architecture and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Newcastle until his retirement in 1984.

From 2007, the fellowship is funded directly by donations made to the University of Newcastle by The Architecture Foundation in support of the fellowship.
