The Grotto: Performance, Multi-Media & Exhibitions
"The Grotto Project: performance and multi-media" is an exciting initiative of the Creative Arts program at the Central Coast campus of the Univesity of Newcastle. Featuring the original works of university students and staff with local artists -- including filmmakers, choreographers, musicians, actors and dancers -- artists enjoy a safe environment to trial provocative and experimental approaches to artmarking with a public audience.
At events the students work with our technical officer to organize all aspects of The Grotto including the evening's program, the publicity, front of house and back stage. Staff operate as mentors and strong supporters of the whole event.
The Grotto has become especially popular for students and local artists wishing to try out a new idea with an audience or to gain suggestions and motivation for the continuation of a developing project. The variety of art forms and mediums presented at the events has led to cross-fertilization between artists from the community and the students, and between different art forms. This has resulted in some very exciting collaborative work being developed.
The Next Grotto
The Grotto Project is extending its already well-established performance-based event into an “expanded” exhibition format. The Grotto Project: Exhibition will be thematically based, with its first incarnation designed to address the question as to what constitutes “portraiture” within the ever expanding and interdisciplinary world of contemporary cultural production.
Expect a challenging exhibition featuring painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and new media works from both students and local artists.
Can an installation or a performance be a portrait?
What does the painted portrait reveal about its subject in the 21st century?
