In 2012 Newcastle Law School academics Dr Nicola Ross, Ann Apps, and Sher Campbell carried out research to determine the value of using a 'simulated client' as a teaching method for first year law students.

Dr Nicola Ross presents to family law professionals on the Central Coast
On 9th May Dr Nicola Ross spoke to 100 lawyers and other family law professionals on 'Relational Approaches to Children's Representation'. The evening event on 'Hearing Children's Voices in Family Law' was organised by the Central Coast Family Law Pathways Network.

Prof Frank Bates Presentation of Kirby Seminar
On Monday May 6th, Professor Frank Bates presented a seminar on the series inaugurated to honour Justice Michael Kirby, formerly of the High Court of Australia. The seminar was entitled, "Return, Return O Shulamite': Discharge of Return Orders in Australian Child Abduction Law".

A University of Newcastle city campus has been locked in with Australian Government grant of $30 million which was announced yesterday by the Federal Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Sharon Bird, and Member for Newcastle, Sharon Grierson.

Associate Professor John Anderson has published an opinion piece in the Daily Telegraph as part of an ongoing campaign by the Daily Telegraph in relation to mandatory minimum sentencing.
Graduation
A large number of students attended the Faculty of Business and Law's April graduation ceremonies on Saturday 13 April.
The Law School was privileged to host the Hon Stephen Gageler (Justice of the High Court of Australia) who delivered an inspiring occasional address. Emma Goodwin was awarded the University Medal in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement throughout her law degree.
Rhea Thrift was awarded the Evatt Medal which is given to the top student in each graduating class.
Sir Ninian Stephen Lecture
The Sir Ninian Stephen Lecture was established in 1993 to mark the arrival of the first group of Bachelor of Laws students at the University of Newcastle. It is delivered by an eminent lawyer each academic year.
This year the Sir Ninian Stephen Lecture was delivered by The Honourable Nicola Roxon titled 'Breathing value into your law degree'.
Nicola served as Minister for Health and Ageing in the Labor Government from 2007-2011 and then as the first female Attorney-General from December 2011 until February 2013.
During her Ministerial term she oversaw major health reforms, including the introduction of plain packaging for all tobacco products sold in Australia and successfully defended a challenge to those laws in Australia's High Court.
Justice Michael Kirby
Justice Michael Kirby lectured at Newcastle University on The Mysteries of Judicial Reasoning: The Case of Garcia vs National Australia Bank.
Justice Kirby is an Australian retired judge, jurist, academic and a former Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was appointed to the High Court in 1996 and he served thirteen years.
