Potential Candidates
INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL CANDIDATES
Recognition is growing internationally that the quality of hospital patient care is enhanced by doctors with generalist expertise who can provide effective and coordinated patient care across specialist disciplines.
As the number of patients with multiple conditions increases, we need more doctors with the clinical skills, organisational knowledge and capacity for inter-professional communication to manage patients at the 'front-line'.
Whatever their clinical roles in hospitals, these are the doctors that hospitals will need more of in the future.
NSW Health is proactively supporting the growth of a highly-skilled generalist medical workforce through its Senior Hospitalist initiative.

The University's online learning system (Blackboard) facilitates communication via email, discussion forums, chat and a virtual classroom and provides access to announcements, course outlines, staff information, course documents and web resources.
Tuition Fees
The program is a full fee postgraduate degree with tuition fees being charged on a per course basis. The per course fee in 2012 is $3,125. As there are 8 courses to complete the total program fee is $25,000.
Applicants who receive NSW Health sponsorship will be invoiced for tuition fees of $1,875 per 10-unit course rather than $3,125. Consequently the overall program cost for NSW Health sponsored candidates will reduce from $25,000 to $15,000.
Fees can be paid in two ways:
- Pay the fee up-front to the University.
- Apply for an interest free loan through the FEE-HELP Scheme (previously known as the Postgraduate Education Loans Scheme). The Government then pays your fee direct to the University and when you are earning $47,196 in the 2011/2012 financial year; indexed each year), you pay instalments back to the Government via the PAYG tax system.

Residential Weekends
Candidates are required to participate in a weekend residential workshop associated with each of the following courses:
Semester 1 Year 1 - Australian Health Service Organisation, Infrastructure and Management
- 2012 - Sydney, Friday 30 March - Sunday 1 April
- 2012 - Newcastle, Friday 31 August - Sunday 2 September
Semester 2 Year 2 - Application of Leadership and Management Skills
The four Residential weekends will each be held in a different location - Sydney, Newcastle, a regional centre and a rural centre - from Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime. Candidates are expected to meet all travel and accommodation costs.
Weekends will be planned as 'retreats', and include a social component.
Each weekend will include formal teaching time, particularly dealing with subject matter that is less suitable for online learning. There will also be less formal time, such as directly learning about the challenges of providing hospital services in smaller rural communities.
Even more importantly, the weekends will provide the opportunity for networking with candidates from other hospitals, and with senior Doctors and Executives in the NSW Health System. Candidates will develop their own personal links with the senior leaders of the health system - the role that they are being trained to fulfill in future.
