Internet Access for Students Under the Age of 18
Parental Consent Form

The University of Newcastle seeks to provide its students with a set of on-line information resources and communication tools. The Internet is the medium by which many of these resources are made available to our students. Students use the Internet for a wide range of study purposes including accessing course materials, support materials such as library databases, and for administrative purposes such as accessing examination results.

The Broadcasting Services Amendment (On-line Services) Act 1999 states that "on-line accounts are not provided to children without the permission of a parent or responsible adult" and further defines children as being under 18 years of age.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority website provides information about the legislation . Additional information is available at cyber(smart:).

As your offer of admission to a program at the University was issued when you were under the age of 18, a parent or a responsible adult must provide permission for your access to the Internet. The section at the bottom of this letter is to be signed by such a person and returned to the IT Service Desk drop box in the CT foyer at the Callaghan campus, or by mail or fax (see details below).

If you or your parent/guardian seeks further information on Internet access, please contact the IT Service Desk on (02) 4921 7000.
