First in Family
Are you the first in your family to attend University?
Succeeding at university takes focus and organisation, and getting a few pointers along the way can certainly make the journey a lot smoother. As a University of Newcastle student, you do have the ability to succeed at Uni however you may need to learn the tricks and skills required to be an effective student.
As a new student it is important to realise that you are not alone! Many of the students entering the uni will have very little knowledge of how studies are conducted and this can be a fairly daunting experience. This new study environment often requires different learning methods and this is a big challenge. The most important thing to remember is that you have made it this far and there are plenty of students starting their studies with you.
The University of Newcastle has a high proportion of students that are the first in their family to attend university; as a result our student support services are experienced at working with students that are new to this environment.
Whilst it’s good to know that services are there, sometimes it’s difficult to know which service to use and how to contact them – have a look at the E Resources for further information
The university has developed this website which is designed to help students sort their way through the support available on campus. Connect 2 Success also sends out fortnightly tips on succeeding at university – these tips have been very popular with students wanting to improve their studies.
Research also suggests that students who actively connect with university life have a better chance of success with their studies. Whether it is attending social activities, joining online communities or study groups – connecting with the university can help you feel like you are part of a community, which seems to lead to better academic performance. Look at joining Amicus (UoN’s Virtual College), Get involved with UoN Services, or meet up with one of the many clubs and societies NUSA has to offer. You may also wish to become involved in a university sporting activity via NUSPORT.
Wishing you the best with your study endeavours – don’t forget, if you aren’t sure of something make sure you ask!
