High School Leaver / Gap year
Congratulations on choosing to continue your education at University of Newcastle!
Commencing studies at UoN is an exciting and challenging time. A new way of learning, different working arrangements and even a new city go hand in hand with commencing a degree. We understand that this provides you with times of great success and great struggle.
Here at Connect 2 Success we would like to help you manage your UoN career so that you achieve your best academic results.
There are many differences between University and School learning. Uni is not 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. Students at uni have more independence and need to manage their own time and learning. While there is plenty of support available for first year students, you will need to manage your own timetable, get assignments in on time, and seek assistance from lecturers and tutors when you need it.
Full-time students generally need to put in around 40 hours of study time per week- this includes your lectures, tutorials, labs, etc., as well as personal study time.
While there is often freedom in attendance at lectures and some other sessions, it is important that you choose to attend your classes. Attending your classes will ensure that you understand key concepts from the courses you are enrolled in and will provide opportunities to socialise with people in your degree or those with similar academic interests.
Research suggests that students who actively connect with university life have a better chance of success with their studies. Whether it is attending social activities, joining online communities or study groups – connecting with the university can help you feel like you are part of a community. Look at joining Amicus (UoN’s Virtual College), Get involved with UoN Services, or meet up with one of the many clubs and societies NUSA has to offer. You may also choose to connect with sports activities via Nusport.
