Review of Progress

What is Review of Progress?

The University requires each Faculty to monitor the academic progress of its students under one or more of the following categories:

  • Failure in 50% or more of units attempted in a term
  • Failure of a compulsory program component.

At the end of each term of study, students are formally advised if they are At Risk of Unsatisfactory Progress and are given a number of possible options for improving their academic performance.

Should their poor academic performance continue for a second consecutive term of study, these students are required to Show Cause as to why they should not be excluded from their program of study.

The Review of Progress Procedure is available to all students and staff of the University and is available at the following link: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/policy/000967.html Refer to section 9 of the Program Management Policy and Procedure Manual - Coursework.

The Procedure outlines the University's formal position on maintaining steady academic progress and the steps the University follows when identifying poor academic performance and determining outcomes. It also contains some useful definitions for the terminology used.

Students who are not maintaining satisfactory progress in their program of study should contact the relevant Program Officer for advice in the first instance. The Program Officer may recommend that the student consult with the Program Convenor, the academic staff member who is in charge of their degree program.
