Summer shutdown FAQ
What is the Christmas closedown?
The University of Newcastle will be closed for the Christmas break from 5pm, Wednesday 19 December 2012 and reopen Thursday 3 January 2013.
However, the Auchmuty and Ourimbah libraries, the AIC and the OIC will remain open until 5pm on Friday 21 December. All other University campus libraries will close at 5pm on Wednesday 19 December 2012.
The Auchmuty, Ourimbah and Sydney campus libraries, AIC and OIC will reopen on Wednesday 2 January 2013.
Huxley library, City Campus library and the CHIC will reopen on Thursday 3 January 2013.
All Libraries and Information Commons will be closed on Australia Day, Monday 28 January 2013.
Borrowing
Can I borrow from Huxley or City Campus Library?
While they are closed, you will not be able to borrow any material from those libraries. See Summer Hours webpage for reopening times.
Can I return my books to Huxley?
You can return your items to Auchmuty Library or Ourimbah Library. All other sites are closed.
When will my items be due back?
Check your Loans receipt or MyLibrary.
Renewing loans online
- View your record in MyLibrary
- Type in your Student or Library card number and PIN, click on Display Record
- Select the items you wish to renew
- Click on the Renew Selected Items, or Renew All button
- Scroll down the page to check that items have been renewed
Requesting from other libraries
Intercampus delivery will only be available between Ourimbah and Callaghan campuses.
During the non-teaching period, mail and Stores Shuttle will operate on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays only.
The last delivery to Ourimbah campus will be Tuesday 18 December. The service will resume on 4 January 2013.
Can I Borrow books from Short Loans during the Shutdown?
Yes. Most Short Loan items from all our libraries can be borrowed as normal until 19 December. Short loan items borrowed 2 hours before closing on Wednesday 19 December 2012 will be due back when all libraries are open on Thursday 3 January 2013.
Can I get material from off-site storage at Thornton?
No. We will be unable to deliver any items from off-site storage within our system during this time. Please DO NOT put holds on any items between Wednesday 19 December 2012 and Wednesday 2 January 2013. The intercampus requesting service for Thornton resumes Thursday 3 January 2013.
Can I put a hold (Request) on a book at another campus?
No. We will be unable to deliver any items from other libraries within our system during this time. Please DO NOT put holds on any items between Wednesday 19 December 2012 and Thursday 3 January 2013.
What will happen to my interlibrary loan (Get It) requests?
We will process these as normal. Any material we cannot deliver electronically can be collected from Ourimbah or Auchmuty libraries.
Can I request items from BONUS+?
Yes. Make sure you use Auchmuty or Ourimbah as your pickup locations as Huxley and City Campus will be closed during this period.
Other services
Can I access a computer?
Access to computers is available at Auchmuty and Ourimbah libraries, the AIC and the OIC.
Can I add credit to my print/photocopy account?
You can add credit to your student card in the AIC (Information Common), upstairs on level 3 in the Auchmuty Library print central and near the photocopy room at the Ourimbah campus library as well as using My printycopy online which you can access through My Hub.
Can I use the archives during Summer Shutdown?
Cultural Collections (which includes the archives) will be closed from 5:00pm Wednesday 19 December 2012. They will reopen 9:00am Thursday 3 January 2013.
Will the library have newspapers during the Shutdown period?
Delivery of newspapers will cease from Wednesday 19 December 2012 and re-commence on Thursday 3 January 2013.
Opening hours
Will the AIC be open?
The Information Common will be open from 8:00am - 10:00pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Saturdays and Sunday. From 5pm on Friday 19 December 2012 until Wednesday 2 January 2013 all University library sites including the AIC are closed.
Will the library be open on the weekends?
During Summer Shutdown period, all the libraries will be closed during weekends.
