What can be deposited
It is mandatory for all University of Newcastle research higher degree, and professional doctorate theses to be deposited in the University repository. The theses will be available online in NOVA: University of Newcastle Research Online.
Other types of theses, e.g., Honours, may also be deposited.
Copyright issues
Please check your thesis for any material that is subject to copyright. For example, if you have included any diagrams, illustrations, or photographs that are not your own work, you will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owners for online publishing. You will also need to upload the permission documents you received from the copyright owners, as they will need to be kept in the repository as a record.
Ideally you should have obtained these permissions and modified your thesis if necessary before submitting it for examination. However, if your examined thesis includes copyrighted material for which you cannot obtain permission then it may need to be removed from your digital thesis. In this case, please contact the Digital Thesis Co-ordinator for advice on the best way to go about this.
NOTE: If you remove copyrighted material before submitting your thesis you will also need to upload the complete, as-examined thesis for us to store as a master copy. Please contact the Digital Thesis Co-ordinator if you have any questions.
The OAK Law Project at Queensland University of Technology has produced a very useful guide to copyright issues:
Theses format
If you have a PDF version of your thesis then upload this file or files. However you can also upload your thesis in other formats (e.g., Word).
Restricting access to your thesis
Our policy is unrestricted worldwide access, however, there are circumstances when theses need to be restricted wholly or in part, for varying periods. The options available for digital theses are:
- no restrictions - worldwide access;
- restrict all access for a certain period as approved by the University. When this period has elapsed, worldwide access will be enabled
All requests for restrictions must be approved via the Application for Embargo form.
