The University of Newcastle is committed to protecting and maintaining the privacy of your personal and health information.

The University complies with the principles and requirements of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002. Personal Information

NSW Privacy legislation defines Personal Information as; Information or an opinion about an individual whose identitiy is apparent or can reasonably be ascertained.

We need to collect and hold information on staff and students in order to carry out our functions. We ensure that all personal information is accurate, complete and up to date, and stored securely.

Uses and Sharing

We access and use your personal information only for the purposes for which you gave it to us. We do not disclose information about you to government agencies or other organisations without your permission unless it:

  • Is necessary to provide you with a service that you have requested;
  • Is required or authorised by law; or
  • Will prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to somebody's health.  

Your Choices

You may request access to the personal information we hold about you. You can ask us to correct any errors and/or place additional information on your file.

To protect your privacy and the privacy of others, we may have to gain evidence of your identity before we can give you access to or change information about you.

Visiting the Website

The University may log certain details when you visit the University website, such as; the IP Address, Server Address, domain name etc. This information is used for statistical purposes only and no attempt will be made to identify the user, unless in the unlikely event of an investigation.

Cookies are used by certain applications of this website to deliver specific content. You may disable your browser's acceptance of cookies, however, this may effect the function or your access to applications. Certain sites use cookies to supply UoN advertisements to visitors after they have left the website. How to Contact Us?

Contact us about any of your privacy concerns or to suggest further improvements to this website.

If you have a complaint about the privacy of your personal information, we ask that you contact us in writing. If you believe that the University has breached your privacy, you may request an internal review or contact the Information and Privacy Commissioners' Office for advice. We will promptly acknowledge and investigate complaints.
