Students and staff of the University of Newcastle are offered access to a range of software applications to assist with teaching, learning and research.
IT Services manages the licencing and distribution or deployment of software across the University. Version control and licence compliance are an essential part of providing a consistent, dependable service to all our users.
Software available at this University can be categorised into 4 groups:
General use software which is distributed under strict licence conditions and is installed on University owned desktops and laptops. This includes computers in student general access areas. There is no cost to the individual student or staff member for use of this software;
Unrestricted* software which is available for download onto personally owned computers of staff and students of the University. There is no cost to the individual student or staff member for user of this software.
*Conditional that the software is available to current University students and staff only;
Licenced software which can only be installed on University owned desktops and laptops and which incurs a licence cost, charged to the appropriate Faculty/School/Unit, and;
Specialised software used for research purposes which must be purchased in consultation with the ARCS (Academic and Research Computing) Team.
