A Summary of Your Comments

In semester 2 you gave us nearly 40,000 comments about your courses - thank you! You told us about the many things that we are doing well, as well as a number of suggestions for where we can make improvements.

What did you tell us?

The themes identified in the comments collected in this survey were similar to those from Semester 1 2009, as well as other internal surveys such as Student Feedback on Programs.

According to your comments you:

  • value teaching skill at least as much as your teachers’ subject knowledge. You often connect the skill of your teachers to your own motivation in a course.
  • see a key relationship between how you learn and the quality and depth of your learning. You often prefer to learn actively, to ‘do’ things in class, and to interact with your teachers and peers.
  • learn better when your teacher is genuinely excited about teaching and the subjects they are teaching.
  • are more motivated when your teachers show genuine concern for your learning progress.
  • are more engaged when you consider what you are learning to be relevant to your personal learning goals. You often relate your own motivation within a course to your perceptions of its relevance to you. 

Assessment is very important to you. It is particularly important to you that your:

  • assessments support your learning, and develop your understanding of course content and skills. This helps the assignments seem relevant to you in which case you tend to engage with them in more depth.
  • teachers provide clear criteria and guidelines. It is particularly important that you are given these in a timely fashion.
  • assessment tasks relate to the learning goals of a course, both in terms of the skills and knowledge that are being assessed as well as how they are being assessed.
  • assessments are marked fairly and are weighted appropriately.
  • teachers provide feedback on your assessments that tells you what you did well and how you can improve, and that this is given in time for you to improve before your next assignments are due.
  • assignments challenge you to do your best work in fun and interesting ways.

The design and organisation of courses is also very important to you. This includes:

  • consistency between the various people teaching on a course, so that there is no confusion about what that you are expected to do to achieve the results that you deserve.
  • flexibility that allows you to learn in ways, at times and in places that suits your individual learning needs.
