About

Introduction

My background is that of Sociology and Politics. I completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) at Newcastle University, a Master of Arts at Macquarie University and my Doctorate also at Macquarie University.  My teaching has been in the areas of migration, multiculturalism, refugees, the politics of cultural recognition, citizenship, democracy, republicanism.

 

Major Accomplishments

Developing policy on ethnicity and multiculturalism in Higher Education in Australia in 1986. Consultant to New South Wales Women’s Advisory Council’s research project ‘Who Cares? The Health and Well Being of Women who are Carers’ in 1992. Consultant to Coburg City Council’s  (Victoria) research on ‘Coburg Carer’s Project’ in 1992. Presented the Corry Guest Lecture in Political Studies at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada on 26 March 2003 on `Exploring Intercultural Citizenship in Australia’.

 

Publications include a book on social problems in Australia, policy document on ethnicity and policy in Higher Education in Australia, research document on NESB Carer’s of the Mentally Ill in Newcastle, book chapters on intercultural citizenship in Australia and the contradictions between cultural citizenship and the policy of multiculturalism. At present working on a book `Liberalism, Republicanism and Cultural Democracy in Australia’.

 

Hoping to educate Australian students into the world of politics, political agency and a renovated notion of citizenship in a global world.
