A/Prof. Md ( Akhtar ) Hossain

Biography

Since 1989, Dr Akhtar Hossain has held an increasingly responsible series of academic posts in the Faculty of Business and Law. This has been interspersed with several professional-development sabbaticals and external appointments. Between 1999 and 2002, Associate Professor Hossain spent three years at the IMF-Singapore Regional Training Institute as International Economist and was World Bank Resident Economic Advisor at the Bangladesh Bank for about six months in 2004. In 1995, he worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a visiting Assistant Professor of Economics and in 2009 was for six months a Research Fellow in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University. He completed his undergraduate studies at Jahangirnagar University (Bangladesh) and earned the B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Economics, both with first class and having first position. Later, he earned both M.A. and PhD degrees in Economics from, respectively, the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University. For his PhD research, he received the La Trobe University medal. Associate Professor Hossain has published across a range of fields in economics. Early research interests focused on Bangladesh, with three research-based books published on the Bangladesh economy. He has also published about 60 research papers in Economics journals and 20 chapters in edited books. Other publications include four reference textbooks on macroeconomic and monetary policy issues in developing countries. Most recently, he has published a reference text Central Banking and Monetary Policy in the Asia-Pacific (London: Edward Elgar, 2009).

Currently, Associate Professor Hossain pursues research interests in macroeconomic and monetary policy issues in the Asia-Pacific, with particular attention to Bangladesh and Indonesia, and is working on a research-based book analysing macroeconomic and monetary policy issues in Indonesia for Routledge.

Research expertise

I am an applied macro and monetary economist. Most of my recent research works are concerned with policy-oriented issues in macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international trade. The economies of the Asia-Pacific are the focus of my research. I am the sole (or principal) author of 45 research papers published in refereed journals and about 20 chapters published in edited volumes. I have authored or co-authored six books - four of them are research-based and the remaining two are reference textbooks on macroeconomics and monetary-financial economics for developing countries. My latest publication (2006) is a co-edited, peer-reviewed research-based book in which I contributed three research papers. Some of the top international publishers such as the Oxford University Press, the Sage Publishers, Routledge, Edward Elgar, and the (former Oxford) University Press Limited (Dhaka) have published my books.

Research interests include; monetary economics, international trade and finance, economic growth and development, Macroeconomics, History and Politics of South Asia & Macroeconomic and monetary policy issues in the Asia-Pacific.

I have experience in both the School and Faculty level administrative duties and responsibilities (including course coordination). I have also been involved in various professional and collegiate activities such as editing a book for a professional association, supervision of postgraduate students, reviewing of journal articles and books for publishers, and examining postgraduate research reports and theses. In addition I performed high-level administrative duties and responsibilities while working for both the IMF and the World Bank.

Teaching expertise

My university teaching responsibilities over the past 15 years or so were in the core areas of economics and finance such as macroeconomics; international trade and finance; money, banking and finance; applied econometrics; and development studies. My recent (2003-2007) teaching responsibilities have been primarily in four undergraduate courses in the areas of money, banking, trade and finance. In addition to University teaching, I have experience in the development and conduct of professional courses in macroeconomics and monetary-financial economics. Lately I have developed teaching interest in the areas of corporate finance and international finance.
