Biography

After obtaining the A.S.C.M. with Merit from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying cello with John Painter, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Cello Performance with High Distinction at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, studying cello with Fritz Magg and Janos Starker. Anthea was also invited to join the highly prestigious Fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda, for academic excellence at the University.

Returning to Australia she joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra, with which she played as principal cellist and soloist,touring extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. In 1984 she joined the Camerata Lysy Gstaad, while furthering her studies with Radu Aldulescu and Pierre Fournier at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. From 1986 to 1994 she was a member of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, Italy, where she often performed and toured with various chamber ensembles and was principal cellist with the Camerata Strumentale di Santa Cecilia, appearing as soloist on several recordings.

She is presently Senior Lecturer in Cello at The University of Newcastle Conservatorium, where she has been teaching cello, chamber music, chamber orchestra and cello ensemble since 1995.

From 1995 to 2003, Anthea also had a continuing presence as a senior teacher of cello and chamber music in the Young Artists Programme at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney.

Research expertise

Since her return to Australia, Anthea has been engaged regularly as a chamber musician with groups such as the Sydney Alpha Ensemble, as guest cellist with the Australia Ensemble, and as Guest Principal Cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Anthea also performs regularly her own compositions for solo cello, and has appeared several times with pianist Natalia Ricci on ABC Classic FM Sunday Live Broadcast series from the University of Newcastle, Conservatorium Concert Hall.
