Research expertise
Doctor Gilligan completed her PhD in Behavioural Science/Public Health (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women: An examination of smoking during pregnancy) in early 2008. Conor coordinated the planning and implementation of a randomised controlled trial of an intervention to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to quit smoking during pregnancy. The intervention and associated studies called upon rigorous methodological approaches to conduct and evaluate complex research processes. This involved working with a multidisciplinary team to prepare applications for ethics approval and co-ordinate the application and approval process, protocol writing, development of materials and systems for data collection and recording, and preparation of materials for education of staff and patients.
This experience enabled the researcher to develop skills in research methodology and project management which she has since applied to a range of other research projects and areas of work.
Dr Gilligan is involved with several research studies examining behaviour change interventions in the area of alcohol consumption and the exploration of teenage drinking, parental attitudes, and patterns of parental supply of alcohol.
Community consultation is currently underway to develop a community-driven project to enhance health and wellbeing in local Aboriginal communities; particularly relating to the social influences on health behaviours such as smoking.
Other areas of research are related to the teaching in which Dr Gilligan is involved, with a large Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) project currently underway. This involves the development of web based teaching resources for interprofessional education for Nursing, Pharmacy, and Medicine students to enhance skills in medication safety and the quality use of medicines across the medications team.
This extensive research repertoire represents a commitment to Public Health and a desire to establish a record, and an ongoing career in research in the area.

Conor is a member of Academic Senate, the Faculty of Health Board, and the Teaching and Learning Committee. Conor actively contributes as a member of the 'Academic experience' working party as part of her Academic Senate role. Conor is also a member of the Medical Education Research Committee which is a committee of the Joint Medical Program.

Teaching expertise
Conor is involved with teaching interactional skills (clinical communication) to Medicine and Pharmacy students. She has been instrumental in the development of resources and implementation of curriculum changes to enhance this aspect of the syllabus across these programs, as well as in Nursing.
Conor also teaches into and coordinates courses in the PDHPE Education Program - dealing with the Public Health a,d Personal Development components of the syllabus.
