Biography

Dr Richard Yu received his PhD from City University of Hong Kong in 2002. After his postdoctoral training with Prof. Rudolf Wu, Dr Yu continued to work in the same institution as a Lecturer until joining the University of Newcastle in 2009.

Richard is now an academic in the Discipline of Biological Sciences in the School of Environmental & Life Sciences.

Research expertise

Richard's research interests lie in the Molecular Toxicology of stressors and chemicals in the aquatic environment. In particular, he is interested in understanding how genes involved in fish embryonic development and reproduction are regulated by aquatic hypoxia and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Because of the increasing demand for simple methodologies for screening EDCs, Yu's laboratory is developing a zebrafish embryo-based bioassay to assess the potential effects of chemicals on steroidogenesis (steroid biosynthesis). In collaboration with Dr Geoff MacFarlane at the University of Newcastle, molecular studies on the action of EDCs in the Sydney Rock Oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) are also underway in Yu's laboratory.

Collaboration

Richard works in close collaboration with Prof Rudolf Wu (University of Hong Kong), Dr Richard Kong (City University of Hong Kong) and Prof John Giesy (University of Saskatchewan), on the molecular mechanisms underlying hypoxia-induced endocrine disruption in fish. Recent collaborative projects (funded) include:

1. GENERAL RESEARCH FUND, HONG KONG RESEARCH GRANTS COUNCIL - 2011 (Project no. 160411)
