Biography
Dr Suhuai Luo is a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology at the University of Newcastle. His research interests include health informatics, machine learning, image processing, computer vision and Internet-oriented IT applications. His diverse research focus has led him to conduct studies in areas ranging from medical imaging for diagnoses, to computer games and simulations.
He has successfully secured ARC Linkage and ARC Discovery grants for his research and has vast industry experience having worked as a senior research scientist at CSIRO in Australia, and at the Bioinformatics institute at A*Star in Singapore.
Dr Luo has lectured and developed curricula for courses in computer science, electrical engineering and information engineering. He currently teaches into the courses related to database management, digital media, system design and web design, and has supervised many honours, masters, and PhD projects.
Dr Luo was also a reviewer for the international peer-reviewed journals such as IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, and the Journal of Research and Practice in Information Technology. Additionally, he has been a session chair for more than 10 international conferences including: IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence for Image & Signal Processing (CIISP); Asia-Pacific Workshop on Visual Information Processing; International Conference on Information Technology and Applications (ICITA); and the Pan-Sydney Area Workshop on Visual Information Processing.

Research expertise
Dr Luo has more than 20 years experience in image processing and multimedia systems. He has led more than 22 and participated in more than 32 research and commercial projects. He has the ability and successful experience in devising projects for, and supervising team members. He has published more than 60 journal and conference papers, and more than 35 confidential technical reports that are highly regarded by his employers CSIRO and A*Star Singapore as confidential intellectual property as well as a performance criterion. His work resulted in external earnings for the organizations. Since joining UofN in 2003, Dr Luo has received more than 10 competitive research grants including 1 ARC Discovery Project Grant, 1 ARC Linkage Grant, and 1 CSIRO Flagship Project.
