Biography

Associate Professor Haskins holds an ARC Future Fellowship (2009-2014), to undertake research into the history of state intervention in Indigenous women's labour and employment in Australia and the United States, between 1880 and 1945. Her key research interests are in gender and cross-cultural relationships in history, and she has published widely in the area of Australian histories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships. Her work focuses on cross-cultural relationships in the period of modern colonialism and post-colonialism, and utilizes comparative and transnational approaches to history, drawing upon a range of traditional and unorthodox sources and methods.

Research expertise

As a cultural and social historian, my main field of research interest is the history of cross-cultural relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, incorporating class and gender analyses into my examination of race and colonialism. Methodologically, I am interested in personal narratives, visual and material culture, and the interactions between popular culture and everyday experience, as well as traditional archival research. I focus particularly on Australian histories and the engagement of white Australian women with Aboriginal people and issues. I am highly committed to collaborative research with Indigenous historians, as I believe that shared histories require shared perspectives and research initiatives. I have held a number of research grants including a current ARC and have published widely in my field.

Collaboration

A member of the Research Institute for Social Inclusion and Wellbeing and an associate member of the Umulliko Indigenous Research Institute, Assoc. Prof. Haskins has held Visiting Fellowships with Harvard University and Monash University. She is committed to the principle of collaborative engagement and research with Indigenous communities, colleagues and advisory bodies, and is currently working on a collaborative research project on Indigenous employers with Professor Lynette Russell at Monash University. She is also part of a collaborative ARC research project (2011-2013) with colleagues from the University of Wollongong, on transcolonial cultures of domestic service.
