The Bachelor of Secondary Teaching / Bachelor of Fine Art combines the study of teaching in secondary schools with specialist studies in visual arts. Areas of study in teaching include the psychology of teaching and learning, the social contexts of education, classroom and behaviour management, Aboriginal education, education policy, and science curriculum and pedagogy. Visual arts studies include a major, studio practice and electives from the following areas: 2D art forms, 3D art forms, Art Theory, and Photo Media or Art Theory.
Visual and fine arts teachers are valued for their ability to strengthen students' understanding of the role of art in the contemporary and historical worlds, and to design programs and provide learning experiences that will give students the skills and opportunities to express their ideas and interests through visual media, including two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D) and four-dimensional (4D) forms. Employment opportunities exist not only in school settings, but industries where the abilities to educate and impart knowledge and product art is a desirable quality.
All states and territories (except the ACT) require teachers to be registered before applying for employment. The regulatory authorities determine the qualification requirements and conditions for employment, which may vary among authorities due to different schooling structures, curriculum, and assessment approaches.

Some occupations require a higher level of completed study than an undergraduate degree, and for this reason it is worthwhile considering the range of Honours, Research Higher Degrees (RHD), Postgraduate Coursework programs and additional study options available. Students in this program may elect to complete a 40 unit embedded Honours program, assuming they meet and maintain the eligibility requirements. Most employers seek to recruit people who have relevant work experience and an appreciation for their industry. Here is a check list of ideas about gaining experience and industry knowledge.
- Check the type of experience most employers in your field of interest expect. Don’t overlook the part time work you may be currently doing. Most employers understand that the skills are transferrable even if the work is not in their industry.
- Check your academic program for any courses that involve a placement or the opportunity to undertake an industry based project.
- Check your school for Summer Scholarships for research opportunities.
- Check vacancy sites for advertised traineeships, part time employment and vacation work opportunities in your field.
- Source and approach organisations directly about possible work shadowing or information interview opportunities.

- Consider volunteering.
Note: Gaining experience may be important but not at the expense of your studies. Make sure you do not overload your timetable with unrealistic work commitments.

Associations and societies often provide relevant and up to date information about a variety of issues relating to specific industry sectors. Many also offer student membership, conference and professional development activities, newsletters and the opportunity to participate in projects.
