Concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in films, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product. Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design. Concept artists develop plans and visual concepts for games and movies. These professionals typically work in computer gaming or movie studio environments, creating characters and scenery. Using principles of art and graphic design, responsibilities include creation and design of environments, backgrounds, characters and colour schemes of gaming or video production from concept to completion based on ideas presented by art directors and development teams.

Concept artists must possess a strong understanding of colour theory and colour palette creation. Knowledge of computer animation tools is essential. The Concept Artist will work closely with the Art Director and project Leads from project inception to finish and will play a major role in establishing and maintaining the look of the project.

Some concept artists may start as fine artists, industrial designers, animators, or even special effects artists. A successful concept artist must be able to switch easily between concept art and production art with the ability to sketch quickly and create storyboards and marketing paintings.
