Interpreters have an in-depth knowledge of language which they utilise to relay verbal information between parties which do not speak the same language, they may also perform this task on written text, translating its content into a language understood by their client. Those working as interpreters in NSW must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). This can be gained by either completing an accredited course or by completing a specialised NAATI test. Linguists are well-prepared to undertake the necessary qualifications to work as interpreters as they have a thorough understanding of the structure of language and different ways which it can be used and understood. They are also equipped to interpret the sometimes highly complex and sensitive content that their job requires.

Employment opportunities exist in all government departments which come into contact with non-English speakers; these include immigration, defence, the court system and social welfare. Other employers include healthcare providers, financial institutions and tourist operations. The client demographics of these employers strongly dictate the demand for particular language interpreters.
