The term linguistic analyst refers to a role which can take a variety of focuses all of which share the underlying task of employing in-depth knowledge of language systems to analyse languages and describe their key characteristics. Various sectors employ linguistic analysts including:

  • Defence and intelligence - Job opportunities exist in government security agencies such as the Defence Signals Directorate analysing foreign signals and reporting on their significance and meaning
  • Academia - Teaching, writing for books and journals and academic research
  • Research - Conducting research on behalf of both government and independent research bodies in areas such as the translation of spoken native languages and development of hearing aid technologies
