Mathematical geologists are interested in using data and computer models to predict geological occurrences such as sedimentation, erosion, volcanic activity and earthquakes. Aside from a highly advanced knowledge of mathematics, statistics and related specialist software, professionals working in this field need to have training in geology - the study of the structure and composition of the earth.

Mathematical geology is a highly specialized field which often requires post-graduate study. Employment opportunities exist in environmental organisations and consultancies, government agencies, the mining and resource industry, scientific research laboratories and educational facilities.
