Mathematical modellers create mathematical models which represent actual scenarios, then manipulate and introduce factors to test the outcomes. This method is useful in a variety of sciences as it allows scientists to experiment and test their theories without having to physically manipulate the factors - something that is often costly and in some disciplines impossible. Examples of applications for this technique include:

  • In medicine - modelling diseases and possible treatments
  • In climatology and environmental science - where researchers may want to look at long terms phenomena and the effects of particular chemicals on the atmosphere
  • Aerospace and transport logistics - where gravity and other physical factors are important and testing is costly

Mathematical modellers usually come from statistics, mathematics and engineering backgrounds though often also require cross-discipline knowledge depending on the field in which they work. Expertise with modelling software and post-graduate qualifications are always well regarded.
