Medical equipment designers design devices that aid in the diagnosis, treatment or monitoring of medical conditions. Medical equipment designers work with clinicians, health care scientist, technologists, prosthetists, and other specialist to create and improve medial equipment that benefits the patient. They also use cutting edge electronic and computing technologies to develop new forms of treatment and specialised equipment. Successes in this area include the development of life support machines, critical care machines, and advances in speech synthesisers among others.

Medical equipment designers build, test and evaluate designs to ensure that there are no detrimental effects to the patient as a result of use of equipment (such as ensuring that materials are biocompatible to minimise rejection by the patients' body).
