Middle managers are usually responsible for a department, division or branch of an organisation, reporting directly to top level managers. This level of management also takes strategic direction from upper management; working to achieve specified objectives and translating top level directives and policies down to the other levels of the organisation. Middle level managers may also be required to allocate spending based on budgets handed down to them, make hiring decisions, prepare reports and make suggestions to more senior management. This is a level of management which requires thorough experience. Paths of entry include:

  • Designated management training positions. These are usually run by medium to large organisations in which employees might enter the organisation as trainee or assistant managers and take part in various different forms of training to prepare them for a middle management role. Although this type of role usually focuses on organisation specific processes, wider transferable skills are also developed. Formal study also provides the opportunity to broaden specific knowledge in a broader business sense
  • Promotion from first level management positions. In this scenario, individuals may have experience but no formal management training and undertake MBA (or similar) studies in order to develop their skills
  • Being hired from middle or first level management roles in other organisation
