Network cabling technicians have an extensive knowledge of all types cabling systems (such as voice and data) which they use to design, plan, install and test networks. They respond to the needs of their client to design effective and efficient systems and may be required to prepare instructional use manuals and to troubleshoot problems. Their broad knowledge of telecommunications equipment and computer software prepares them for working with a variety of mediums such as fibre optics.
An undergraduate degree is usually sufficient for this line of work where practical training and certificate courses are also available. Employment opportunities exist with telecommunications companies, large organisations and businesses that place high demand on their network systems and in consultancies or small business. Post-graduate qualifications may be necessary for management or research roles.
