Optical research scientists spend their time conducting experiments and developing integrated photonics systems and instrumentation, usually within a research and development laboratory. Professionals working in this field have a firm knowledge base in physics and maths and often utilise highly specialised software applications.

Areas of specialisation within this industry include bio-optics, imaging and fibre-optic sensor system development. Post-graduate qualifications are almost always required for these types of positions which may be found in telecommunications companies, defence and other government agencies.
