Pipeline engineers specialise in the design, construction, and maintenance of equipment, facilities, and structures related to pipelines. In consultation with other engineering specialists, they may work with pipelines in the oil, gas, water, and energy industries, in addition to sub-sea deepwater pipelines and inshore/offshore drilling.

Pipeline engineers typically require a background in mechanical or civil engineering (structural). Typical work activities may include:

  • Preparing design proposals for pipelines and pipeline equipment.
  • Designing appropriate layouts of pipelines based on mapping and surveying techniques.
  • Monitoring operation and construction costs.
  • Providing technical advice to pipeline operators.
