Podiatric surgery is a specialist field in the podiatry profession. Qualified specialist podiatrists provide surgical treatment for conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related lower extremity structures. Podiatric surgeons provide specialised care for the bone, joint, ligament, muscle and tendon pathology for the foot and ankle which includes:

  • structural deformities including congenital deformities
  • injuries including fractures and dislocations
  • bone spurs
  • heel pain
  • nerve entrapments
  • degeneration and arthosis of the joints of the foot and ankle
  • skin and nail conditions


Podiatric surgeons typically operate as part of a surgical team in private hospitals. An initial qualification in podiatry is required, followed by extensive postgraduate medical and surgical training. In Australia, podiatric surgeons are included in both the Health Insurance Act and the National Health Act.
