Production planners are responsible for planning the budget and timeline of the production of goods such as industrial materials and food. This process involves tasks such as scheduling, liaising with suppliers, costing the required labour and organising delivery of the product. Usually, production planners have technical expertise in manufacturing the particular product type (e.g. steel or electronics) as well as experience and qualifications in supply chain or project management. Production planners also need to have good communication skills as they may be required to manage relationships with clients, suppliers and contractors as well as oversee a team of staff. Employment opportunities exist within all sectors of the manufacturing industry as well as in large scale operations such as defence and construction.
