Recreation officers are employed to facilitate community sport and recreation initiatives. Their role may cover aspects such as grant applications, program development, supervision and coordination, promotion and needs assessment and response. Within this profession a variety of different roles exist, these can be defined as:

  • Professional: planning, research, consultancy, education and administration
  • Technical: management and logistics
  • Operative: face to face contact with the community

Professionals in this field may specialise within a certain area (e.g. a sport or population health issue) or may perform a more generalist role. Employment opportunities for graduates exist in local, state and federal government departments, private sporting clubs and institutions and not-for-profit organisations. Opportunities for recreation officers are likely to grow as community health issues such as obesity and diabetes continue to gain relevance and consequently, funding.
