Midwives provide care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and childbirth, as well as postnatal care for women and babies. Midwives monitor the health of the mother and baby from the pre-conceptual period, through to the postnatal period, ensuring medical well-being and comfort. As well as providing medical care and support to mother and newborn, Midwives also provide advice and education to women, their partners and families. Midwives can work in a range of setting such as the home, community, hospitals, clinics and health units.
To gain qualification as a Midwife, an undergraduate degree in Midwifery and board registration is required. Alternatively, Registered Nurses are able to gain qualifications as a Midwife by completing postgraduate study in midwifery.
