The School Principal has overall responsibility for the whole school - students, staff (teaching and administrative), teaching and learning and all associated areas. This includes the education and welfare of all students, all educational programs, learning outcomes, the management of staff and staff welfare development, financial management of the school, the management of the school property and the development of partnerships between the school and the school community. School Principals have the responsibility of ensuring that relevant state and school based educational policies are enacted.
Requirements for this position include a successful teaching background with proven experience in planning, leading and management in the areas of teaching programs and staff. The Principal role requires personal strengths in strategic thinking, planning and management, the ability to build positive relationships, and the ability to deal with complex issues and manage change. Post graduate qualifications in education, education management or other related disciplines may be an advantage.
Deputy Principal /Assistant School Principal
The Deputy Principal along with the principal is responsible for overseeing the teaching and learning programs in the school. The Deputy Principal is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the school and for the welfare of all students and staff. For example, the Deputy Principal may play a more active role overseeing school behaviour management programs, the daily organisation of staffing including relief staff. In some smaller primary schools the Assistant Principal is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the school and for the welfare of all students and staff. However, as most Assistant Principals also have a class to teach their responsibilities are shared with the Principal. This role requires successful experience in classroom teaching and leadership within a school setting.
