Stage managers coordinate and oversee all aspects of stage performances ensuring that they run smoothly and professionally. They may be responsible for technical aspects such as light and sound, for scheduling rehearsals, coordinating prop and wardrobe departments as well as cueing actors and briefing them on script adjustments.

Stage managers are very knowledgeable about dramatic and theatrical practices and how to achieve high production values. They are good managers of people who can organise multiple tasks or aspects of a performance at once, and can respond quickly to problems or changes in the production. Specialised industry courses are available and technical and industry knowledge is highly valued though previous work experience is often an important factor in attaining employment.
