A planning engineer in the telecommunications sector can work within a data planning team or a design planning team.

A data planning engineer works closely with the design planning team to map residential and non-residential telecommunications networks. Their main tasks are to deliver capacity planning and reporting for network elements within the data network, as well as ensure that recommendations on network capacity upgrades (from design planning engineers) are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner.

A design planning engineer works closely with a quality assurance team to design and integrate complex networks, as well as make recommendations related to network architecture, evaluation of hardware and software products and problem resolution.

Desirable attributes for this type of position include having excellent IT and communications skills, the ability to work under pressure and the ability to grasp new concepts quickly.

This position generally requires no less than 4 years experience in the field of telecommunications networks.
