Tourism marketing professionals specialise in the design, coordination and execution of marketing strategies, products and events related to tourism. This may mean identifying potential markets for particular destinations, assisting in the development of new products such as tours or conducting competitor analysis and consumer research. Defining a client's online presence, managing branding and attendance at trade and consumer events and designing publications and other communication materials are also typical tasks.

Professionals in this field have an excellent knowledge of both marketing strategies and of tourism - issues, trends, and management. Combined studies in marketing and tourism provide a good pathway into this career, though work experience is also useful. Some students complete paid or un-paid work at tourist information centres or other tourism/hospitality venues and find that this provides valuable industry knowledge. Employment opportunities exist in government departments, for private tourism organisations (such as hotel chains and airlines) and within marketing consultancies, some of which specialise in the tourism industry.
