PhD SCHOLARSHIPS: CHINA

The University of Newcastle, Australia and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) are colaborating to offer  tuition fee scholarships to outstanding PhD candidates from the People’s Republic of China.

These scholarships outline the close relationship that the University has with the CSC and further reinforce the depth of the University’s commitment to enhancing the research opportunities for high-calibre Chinese candidates.

Under this unique collaboration, candidates from top ranking Chinese Universities are welcome to apply for places as PhD candidates and will be considered for scholarships that include the costs of:

  • All tuition fees and research fees
  • An annual living allowance (set by the CSC )
  • Return airfare from China to Australia
  • Visa fees plus Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the course (up to four years.) This is included in the CSC living allowance.

Successful candidates are provided with a dedicated workspace and a University laptop computer with a standard suite of software including Microsoft Office, multi-media,academic and anti-virus software.
Candidates will be able to apply for annual funding of AUD 1500 for research related activities, including conference attendance or other activities related to improving their research outcomes.

The Office of Graduate Studies

The Office of Graduate Studies provides a consolidated university focus on postgraduate studies and is responsible for:

  • candidature, rules and regulations;
  • enrolment and re-enrolment;
  • research scholarship administration;
  • academic progress reporting coordination;
  • variations to research candidature (eg. leave of absence, transfer of program, topic, supervisor or School); and

  • submission and examination of thesis.

Eligibility


To be eligible to apply for a joint scholarship, candidates will need to meet the criteria listed below:

  • You must be a citizen and permanent resident of the People’s Republic of China, at the time of application
  • You must not be currently working abroad or studying abroad
  • You must fulfil all the academic entry requirements set by the University of Newcastle, Australia, including English language entry requirements

  • You must fulfil all the requirements of the CSC
  • You should be intending to pursue a PhD in one of the priority academic areas identified by CSC or one of those identified by the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Applications close on 1st February each year and scholarships will be awarded jointly by the University and the CSC in June.

How To Apply


The University’s rolling enrolment system allows research candidates to begin their PhD studies at any time of the year.

Documentation to support your application should also include:

  • A research proposal identifying the area and nature of your intended research
  • An academic resume (noting all academic awards, research publications and citations)
  • Translated transcripts of Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees
    English language test results (IEL TS or TOEFL )

*Please note on your application form that you will be applying for a CSC scholarship.

Find an academic supervisor


Candidates can use the university’s online resources to assist them to find an available supervisor.
The Voluntary Register of Supervisors can be accessed here.  

The University recommends that candidates contact an academic to discuss potential supervision prior to submitting an application form.

Candidates who are successful in their application will receive a letter of offer for a place in the Research program in Newcastle.

Once the candidate has the letter of offer, they will be able to apply to the CSC for the CSC component of the scholarship.

CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The University of Newcastle is proud to announce the availability of a series of scholarships schemes offered by the Chinese Government, for postgraduate students, scholars, and teachers that wish to study or undertake research in a Chinese higher education institution. 

This opportunity is available for a variety of disciplines including science, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, law, management, education, history, liberal arts, and philosophy.  

Eligibility


• Must be a student or staff member of the University of Newcastle.
• Applicants must be Australian citizens.
• Chinese language proficiency is not required.
• Applicants for masters degree programs must have bachelors degree and be under the age of 35.
• Applicants for Doctoral degree programs must have masters degree and be under the age of 40.
• General scholar candidates must have completed two years of undergraduate studies and be under the age of 45. May study all majors accept Chinese language.
• Senior scholar candidates must have masters degree or above, or hold academic titles of associate professor or above, and be under the age of 50.
