Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Australian Postgraduate Awards are funded by the Commonwealth Government and are available to candidates undertaking a full-time research Master's or PhD degree. Applicants must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. These awards provide a living allowance ($23,728 p.a. full time stipend,  $12,898 part time stipend, in 2012), a relocation allowance (if necessary) and a thesis allowance.

Duration: three years for a PhD degree, two years for a Master's degree.

Applications close 31 October each year.

University of Newcastle Postgraduate Research Scholarship (UNRS Central)

These scholarships are tenable for two years for Master’s degree candidates and three years for PhD candidates, subject to satisfactory academic progress. These awards provide a living allowance ($23,728 p.a. full time stipend,  $12,898 part time stipend, in 2012) and may also provide a relocation allowance and thesis allowance for the candidate.

Applications close 31 October each year.

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI)

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry are awarded as part of an Australian Research Council Grant and are available to candidates undertaking a full-time research Master's or PhD degree. Applicants must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. For projects commencing after 2009, International candidates are also eligible. These awards provide a living allowance ($ 27,651 p.a. full time stipend,  $ 15,102 part time stipend, in 2011), a relocation allowance and a thesis allowance.

Duration: three years for a PhD degree, two years for a Master's degree.

University of Newcastle Postgraduate Research Scholarship (UNRS External)

University of Newcastle Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UNRS External) funded from external sources (e.g. research grants) become available throughout the year, and are advertised on JASON.

These scholarships are available to both domestic and international students and are usually tenable for two years for Master’s degree candidates and three years for PhD candidates, subject to satisfactory academic progress. These awards provide a living allowance ($23,728 p.a. full time stipend,  $12,898 part time stipend, in 2012) and may also provide a relocation allowance and thesis allowance for the candidate (depending on the funding source).


For International Students

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) of the Australian Government offers International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (formerly known as Endeavour IPRS) to support international students in high quality research programs at Australian universities. These scholarships cover the full tuition fee and medical insurance for a period of two years for a Master's degree and three years for a Doctoral degree. Recipients of an IPRS will also be awarded a University of Newcastle Research Scholarship which provides a living allowance ($23,728 p.a. in 2012), a relocation allowance and a thesis allowance.

Application is open to students from all countries with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency. For details on acceptable forms of evidence, please refer to the English Language Proficiency Policy.

Please note that any student who has already commenced a research higher degree in Australia and has been previously considered for IPRS is not eligible to re-apply for this scholarship.

University of Newcastle International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UNIPRS)

University of Newcastle International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UNIPRS) are funded by the University. The scholarship provides an exemption for tuition fees. In most cases, a Faculty-funded University of Newcastle Research Scholarship will also be awarded which provides a living allowance ($23,728 p.a. in 2012), and the payment of Overseas Students Health Cover.

Duration: three years for a PhD degree and two years for a Master’s degree.

Application is open to students from all countries with the exception of Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency. For details on acceptable forms of evidence, please refer to the English Language Proficiency Policy.

Applications close on 31 August each year.

Glenn and Ken Moss RHD Scholarship

Dr Ken Moss is an alumnus and long-term supporter of the University of Newcastle in his role on the University Council and several advisory boards to the Faculty of Engineering. Ken and his wife Glen wish to offer scholarship top ups to successful applicants, who will be Mechanical Engineering or Mechatrioncs Students who have been offered an APA scholarship or who missed obtaining an APA scholarship but show great potential in undertaking a research higher degree.

The Rhodes Scholarship 2012

 

One cadndiate is selected for the Rhodes Scholarship for each state each year. There are also three Australia at Large Rhodes Scholarships which may be awarded to candidates from any state or territory each year. The Scholarship benefits include return airfares to London and a yearly stipend. Click here for more information.

PhD Scholarship in Medical Physics

The University of Newcastle is offering a PhD scholarship funded by the Cancer Council NSW in the research area of adapting treatment plans for cancer radiation therapy.

The scholarship is a full stipend scholarship however top-up scholarships for candidates who have been awarded and APA or University of Newcastle Scholarship would be considered.

International Fulbright Science and Technology Awards

Applications have opened for the 2012 International Fulbright Science & Technology Awards (IS&T) .

Valued at up to US$300,000 IS&T Awards are open to Australian citizens to undertake a full PhD program in the United States. The Award can be started between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012.

Gowrie Trust Fund Research Scholarship

The Gowrie Trust Fund Research Scholarship is available to research students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents who are Australian soldiers, or their lineal descendants. These scholarships are administered by The Gowrie Trust Fund, and in 2010, paid a scholarship of $4000, with a tenure of 2 years. You may obtain application forms and additional information from:

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)

The National Health and Medical Research Council provides funding and scholarships to support research. Click for details on available scholarships

BlinkMobile Graduate Research Scholarship

One scholarship of $10,000 is available to a high calibre research candidate within the field of computer science or software engineering.The successful applicant will have an excellent academic record, and will be interested in pursuing a research career in mobile enablement. Domestic and international candidates are eligible to apply.

The scholarship has been established by Alan Williams through the Williams Family Trust with the aim to encourage excellence and to allow access to business and professional networks.
The application process will require a written statement outlining suitability, referees, and may include an interview.

PhD Scholarship in Cross-Cultural History

The Research Institute for Social Inclusion and Wellbeing (RISIW) at the University of Newcastle invites applications for a 3.5 year, full-time PhD scholarship to work with Associate Professor Victoria Haskins, who is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow based at RISIW.

We are seeking a high-calibre postgraduate candidate to carry out research under Associate Professor Haskins’ supervision in the broad area of cross-cultural histories and gender in the late modern period.

Associate Professor Haskins’ area of research expertise is Australian and US Indigenous race relations history, and her Future Fellowship program is a comparative and transnational historical analysis of interventionist government policies in Indigenous domestic employment in Australia and the United States.

Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award - Faculty of Science and IT

The Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award is available to candidates undertaking a full-time research Master’s or PhD degree within the Faculty of Science and Information Technology.  The applicant must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and an Australian citizen.

Applicants must have completed at least four (4) years of undergraduate study and attained Honours Class 1 or equivalent. The successful applicant will receive a living allowance of AUD$22,860 (per annum in 2011).

Duration: Three years for a PhD degree or two years for a Masters degree by research.

Joint Academic Scholarships On-Line Network (JASON)

The University of Newcastle is a member of the Joint Academic Scholarship On-line Network (JASON for short), a program developed jointly by a number of universities. Its aim is to assist students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies (either within Australia or internationally) gain access to current information regarding funding opportunities through various scholarship programs run through universities, charitable foundations, government and private institutions.
