Harmony Day is held around Australia on the 21st of March each year to celebrate our success as a diverse society. The focus of Harmony Day is to build social cohesion through the promotion of Respect, Participation and a sense of Belonging.

The Equity and Diversity Unit, the International DivisionEnglish Language and Foundation Studies CentreUon ServicesNUSA and Campus Central work together each year to host a range of events to celebrate Harmony during the month of March. A Taste of Harmony has been a regular feature of our celebrations in recent times.

The message for Harmony Day in 2011 is that Everyone Belongs. This means that all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background. It's a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, recognising the traditional owners of this land. It's also about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live.

2011 at the University of Newcastle will see a week of inclusive on-campus events designed to celebrate the rich diversity of our staff and students. As well as the planned events, staff are encouraged to explore cultural diversity in their own work areas, by organising local events, such as a morning tea or lunch.
