Evacuation Wardens

The University of Newcastle Evacuation Wardens have the responsibility to assist staff and students of, and visitors to, the University to evacuate buildings and other areas that may present a risk to their safety. By following the procedures, remaining calm and using sound judgement wardens can greatly reduce the risk of injury.

At all times wardens shall remember that they act in an advisory capacity, and their role is to:

  • direct and advise people on the safest method of evacuating a building;
  • relay information to others in the building; and
  • advise emergency and security services personnel of the status of their building, when the services arrive.

It is not the responsibility of evacuation wardena to physically remove people from buildings, locate the source of the fire or bomb or fight a fire (unless suitable training has been received).
