Safety Tips

Please read the following safety tips to help you to recognise and avoid potentially risky situations.

Plan Your Movements

  • If walking after dark, walk in a group or call Security for an escort on:

Newcastle 4921 5888
Central Coast 4348 4222

  • Stick to the priority walking route (Callaghan) (PDF), which includes the road to Warabrook train station and the path to on campus residences
  • Get to know the campus and the emergency phone locations (Callaghan campus)
  • If you are planning to be on campus after dark, move your car closer to your location and have your keys in your hand as you approach your car
  • Know your transport timetable to avoid long waits at bus or train stations
  • If you have trouble speaking English, carry a small document with your name, address, date of birth, telephone number and native language. If you have a local friend who can help interpret for you, include their contact details too
  • Do not carry large amounts of money

Be aware of your surroundings

  • Stick to main roads rather than quiet, unlit paths
  • Avoid isolated areas
  • Pay attention to your intuition. If any area doesn't feel safe - avoid it
  • Change direction if you think you are being followed
  • Don't walk alone at night listening to your ipod
  • If in trouble, make a lot of noise
  • Be alert and walk purposefully

Report suspicious behaviour to security

  • Security is on call 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week:

Call 4921 5888 for Newcastle campus
Call 4348 4222 for Central Coast campus
  • Program University Security's phone number into your mobile phone
  • Remember, most mobile phones will call 000 even when no credit is on the sim card
Newcastle City Council in conjunction with NSW Police & Liquor Accord representatives have developed a free smartphone application.  The app contains useful information relating to ‘walk smart paths’, a travel guide to the public transport system, late night services and general safety information to name a few.  Please this link for further information.
