Passions, and pedagogies: Teaching and learning in the 21st century
Facilitating the acquisition of globally relevant knowledge, beliefs and skills, Associate Professor Ruth Reynolds is seeking to refine the focus of Australian primary school education.
A classroom teacher for 20 years, Associate Professor Ruth Reynolds from the Central Coast campus, is an expert on educating children.
"My research is around my teaching and my teaching is in the area of Humanities and Social Sciences in primary school," the esteemed teacher-educator explains.
Yet Ruth's PhD studies also investigated the links across the various Humanities and Social Science discipline and interdisciplinary studies, to clarify the key facets of this Australian Curriculum learning area in secondary schools. In short, her academic experience stretches from Kindergarten to Senior Secondary School.
"I explore and evaluate the best ways to teach geography, history, civics and citizenship, economics and business studies, cultural studies and other subjects in the field," she conveys.
"And I do this with a global perspective."
"The focus of this area is active citizenship, learning the skills and values to be 21st century global citizens."
Ruth's expertise in this area has resulted in her consultancy in NSW primary curriculum development. This has extended to national curriculum initiatives in History education, Geography education, Civics and Citizenship education, Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. Author of 17 books for children, teachers, teacher educators and academics, her influence is world-wide.
Pictures worth a thousand words
A key area of interest that developed from her PhD and consultancy work has been the use of maps and pictures with children to explore and develop intercultural understanding.
"For 21st century living, we need to learn with other people and about other people," the social science researcher insists.
"Maps can help with this."
Ruth worked with colleagues at the University of Umea in Sweden throughout the exercise, simultaneously endeavouring to change stereotyped perceptions of various ethnicities and places. The creative collaborator "compared and contrasted" the skewed perceptions of children in Sweden with the skewed perceptions of children in Australia, unearthing some "very interesting" similarities and differences.
"The former knew about Denmark and other Nordic countries," she reveals.
"They were aware of Australia too."
"Ours, on the other hand, knew very little about close neighbours, such as New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, and were uninformed about Scandinavia."
"Both had particular views of the US, and these weren't always positive."
With the East and Africa "off their radar completely," Ruth subsequently sought to devise a creative arts program and encourage intercultural associations between continents. To this end she worked with the local African community.
"It's a really important undertaking…I want to develop curriculum that leads to improvements in problematic prejudicial behaviours."
A whole new world
Ruth is involved with the University of Newcastle's impressive Global Education Research and Training Group. Passionate and pioneering as its proud director, she is determined to move teaching efforts "out of the classroom" and into a more "authentic" environment – the real world.
"We're building the global awareness and ability to implement 21stcentury globally relevant curriculum of pre-service teachers," she asserts.
"We're experimenting with new pedagogies, such as ICT and social media."
"It's all about giving primary school-aged children a chance to collaborate and participate and engage with the world."
Members of this research group present their work in multiple venues around the world and have recently published an edited volume including 11 international authors.
As editor of US-based National Council of Social Studies' Journal of International Social Studies, Ruth provides a platform for international researchers to address curriculum and pedagogy across the globe.
Taking her leadership role even further, Ruth has recently completed a school internship Study Abroad trip to China. Together with a fellow academic, the prolific publisher and her group of eager student teachers travelled to Shanghai and Beijing in October 2015, engaging with children from the cities' multiple different schools through a handful of carefully planned interactive sessions.
"It was very interesting to teach those from another culture," she muses.
"We'll definitely be seeking to incorporate some of what they do into our Australian curriculum, and they learned from us too."
"It is an exciting time for teaching," Ruth exclaims passionately.
"Our well educated teachers from the University of Newcastle are at the forefront of globally connected excellent teaching."
"Research into how to do it even better is much needed."

The editors asked international educators in different contexts to indicate how their own experience of global education addresses the broad and contested concepts associated with this notion. Following the lead of the internationally acknowledged authors from North America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia, perspectives were provided on a wide variety of contexts including tertiary education, and teacher education; various pedagogies for global education, including digital pedagogies; and curriculum development at school, tertiary and community levels. Contesting and Constructing International Perspectives in Global Education explores the tensions inherent in discussions of global education from a number of facets including spatial, pedagogical, temporal, social and cultural; and provides critical, descriptive and values-laden interpretations. The book is divided into five sections, Temporal and Spatial Views of Global Education; Telling National Stories of Global Education; Empowering Citizens for Global Education; Deconstructing Global Education; and Transforming Curricula for Global Education. It is envisaged as a starting point for a stronger international conception of global education and a way to build a conversation for the future of global education in a neo-liberal and less internationally confident time.

However, in the primary school area of the curriculum, examples of active citizenship, and especially active citizenship in a global world, are not easily found. This article exposes some of the complexities of espousing active global citizenship, and then interrogates the primary school Australian Curriculum documents in Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), English, and Science to find instances of guidance for teachers in promoting these ideas. It was found that learning ¿about¿ active citizenship was an opportunity explored in the curriculum documents much more often than learning ¿to be¿ active citizens. If our younger citizens are indeed seen as requiring an active globally oriented citizenship education in our schools, surely our key curriculum documents should lead this focus by providing real opportunities for teachers to engage in it.

[more] This study compared pre-service teachers¿ perceptions of their professional competencies at two campuses of a large regional teacher education university, where one campus provided students 22% more hours of professional placement in schools and related educational settings. Students who had experienced more hours in schools and such settings were more positive about their, ability to apply their knowledge of students and how they learn, classroom management, professional knowledge and practice, and community engagement; however, when students felt well supported during professional experience, such differences diminished. Additional hours were not associated with pre-service teachers¿ perceptions of their ability to apply subject content and teaching; plan, assess and report; and effective student communication. Researchers argued that this pointed to the crucial role of good classroom mentors in teacher professional experience but also the value of students¿ tertiary teacher education in preparing them for classroom teaching.

Effective delivery of GE is reliant on adequate teacher preparation. A group of teacher educators at one University sought to raise the profile of GE with pre-service teachers through the integration of global perspectives in various courses. This paper explores pre-service teacher perceptions of the importance of GE and their learning as a result of this emphasis. Additionally, pre-service teacher preferences for further learning about GE are examined. It is apparent that pre-service teachers are interested in GE, especially in terms of how they can incorporate it in their teaching and, with exposure over a number of semesters student understandings develop, creating better prepared teachers of GE. Not surprisingly, these students were primarily focused on their future classroom practices rather than their role in the world more generally. Additionally, it was clearly evident that unique GE approaches were linked to specific teaching disciplines, an indication that GE continues to be a difficult concept to incorporate without explicit guidance for integration, something not always easy in a university setting. © 2014 Taylor and Francis.

[more] This paper describes the development and evaluation of web-based museum trails for university-level design students to access on handheld devices in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. The trails offered students a range of ways of exploring the museum environment and collections, some encouraging students to interpret objects and museum spaces in lateral and imaginative ways, others more straightforwardly providing context and extra information. In a three-stage qualitative evaluation programme, student feedback showed that overall the trails enhanced students' knowledge of, interest in, and closeness to the objects. However, the trails were only partially successful from a technological standpoint due to device and network problems. Broader findings suggest that technology has a key role to play in helping to maintain the museum as a learning space which complements that of universities as well as schools. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Recent outbreaks of emergent viral pathogens, such as West Nile virus, and the use of live vaccinia virus as a vaccine have prompted a reassessment of the viral safety of plasma-derived products. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of current viral inactivation methods for West Nile and vaccinia viruses and to reassess the use of model viruses to predict inactivation of similar viral pathogens. Materials and Methods: Virus-spiked product intermediates were processed using a downscaled representation of various manufacturing procedures. Virus infectivity was measured before and after processing to determine virus inactivation. Results: The results demonstrated effective inactivation of West Nile virus, vaccinia virus and a model virus, bovine viral diarrhoea virus, during pasteurization, solvent/detergent treatment and caprylate treatment. Caprylate provided rapid and effective inactivation of West Nile virus, vaccinia virus, duck hepatitis B virus and Sindbis virus. Inactivation of West Nile virus was similar to that of bovine viral diarrhoea virus. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that procedures used to inactivate enveloped viruses in manufacturing processes can achieve inactivation of West Nile virus and vaccinia virus. In addition, the data support the use of model viruses to predict the inactivation of similar emergent viral pathogens.

Although there has been some exploration of how European children view their world there is little recent research on Scandinavian children's knowledge and associated perceptions of the wider world, or about Australian children's views. Coming from opposite parts of the globe it could be expected that children from Sweden and Australia would view the world in a very different manner. This study compared children's knowledge of countries in the world from comparable schools in both nations and found the expected influence of local geographic knowledge and social and economic place in the world on their skills and knowledge. They were influenced by their national space. However, media and popular culture also impacted on their views on the world and this impact was quite similar between the two nations.
