This scholarship is intended to support a diverse cohort who are looking to kick-start, upskill, re-skill or transition their careers. The Sir William Tyree Foundation would like to support the development of a future skilled workforce in Electrical Engineering through the provision of scholarships to regional and remote undergraduate students to overcome some of the financial hurdles faced by these students.
The scholarship may include opportunities to connect with the Tyree company businesses. Potential Industry engagement opportunities may include career-ready placements, internships and final year projects. Students who hold scholarships from the Sir William Tyree Foundation are encouraged to find work placements in the electrical engineering industry. The University will seek to ensure that a diverse cohort of students is created as the program evolves.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Have completed a Diploma of Engineering the year prior to commencing your 2nd year of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at the University of Newcastle.
- Be enrolled in your 2nd year of Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. Preference will be given to students undertaking a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Honours).
- Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
- Demonstrate the impact of educational disadvantage such as carer and sole parent responsibilities, financial hardship, a long-term medical condition or disability, the ongoing effects of abuse, regional/remote disadvantage, or applicant attributes such as being an Indigenous Australian, having a Refugee background, or placement with an Out-of-Home Care provider.
- Reside in one of the University of Newcastle’s Designated Regions.
- Be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident (including holders of a permanent humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens with permanent residency).
- Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- The application will include a free text question asking you to outline your interest in associated future opportunities with this donor and/or Industry partner.
- You may be required to provide documents to support your educational challenges and personal circumstances. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
Benefit
The scholarship provides a total benefit of $60,000 over a 3-year tenure, provided ongoing eligibility is met for the term of the scholarship. Successful students undertaking a double degree program that includes a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Honours) may be eligible for a term of 4 years.
The scholarship will be paid as a $10,000 lump sum each semester.
Payments are typically received 2–3 weeks after the semester census date, or 2–3 weeks after you accept your offer if the census date has already passed.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria. Interviews may be arranged and will include a donor representative if required.
Selection will give preference to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (including Combined).
